No doubt, one of the key benefits of practicing yoga is improved flexibility. But flexibility is not required to do yoga from the start. Practicing yoga helps you cultivate more flexibility over time.
When I first became a yoga teacher I could not touch my toes when I did a seated forward fold. I could do that pose, but was certainly not flexible enough to touch my toes (or better yet have my nose touch my knees… I still can’t do that, lol). But over time my flexibility has improved such that I can now touch my toes in that pose.
If time permitted we could discuss every pose and how it can help improve flexibility, but the bottom line is continued practice improves flexibility. Continued practice is the key factor. That doesn’t have to be every day, but the more consistent the practice the faster your flexibility improves. The lesson in flexibility through yoga, at least for me, has been to: 1. Give yourself grace as you progress over time…we are all unique individuals with unique bodies and our flexibility will be different than those around us and that is totally okay. 2. Be as consistent in your practice as you can, knowing that consistency will help you improve your flexibility, among other things. 3. Be open to exploring what your body can do in each practice, while minding whatever limitations you may have at that time. The lessons of flexibility through yoga can easily be transferred to our personal lives as well, and that will be the subject of our next blog. Until then, stay flexible.
