Last month we talked about trying something new, and this month we are focused on trying something different. Are they the same? They can be. You can try something new, and it will also likely be something different for you. But doing something differently is not always going to be the same as doing something new. Example – if you never take the metro when you go to New York City for the weekend, taking the metro would be both something new and different for you. However, if you normally walk around NYC when you visit, but decide to walk in a different area or in a different direction than you usually do you are doing something different, but not necessarily new.

Doing something new and doing something different both require us to step outside our normal routine and comfort zone to some degree, no doubt. But doing something differently cause our brains to rewire synapses in new and different ways that can have some pretty profound impacts on our brains, our cognitive functioning, and more.

Jim Kwik is an author, speaker, and coach and he is known as the world’s #1 Brain coach. In his book Limitless (which I recommend if you haven’t read it already), he talks quite a bit about doing things differently every day to keep your mind sharp, especially as we age. Whether that is changing the order of your morning routine up, brushing your teeth with the opposite hand, driving a different route to or from work, etc. It may feel clunky or hard, but you are forcing your brain to work harder, building those pathways which will pay dividends in the future.

So not only are you working on being more you by doing things differently than others, but you are sharpening your mind in the process. Win-win! Namaste.
