Yoga Nidra - The Perfect Self-Care

I might be biased, but I would argue that without a doubt, Yoga Nidra is the perfect self-care tool.  Yoga Nidra loosely translates to yogic sleep, and with just that said, you know right away that it has to be an amazing self-care tool! 

Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation that brings you a state of consciousness that is somewhere between being fully awake and being asleep – a super relaxing state of being.  I know some people who like to refer to it as “savasana on steroids”.  Research has shown that about 40 minutes of yoga nidra can be as restful for the body as a 3-hour nap.  (Relaxing AND efficient! 😉)

Another wonderful thing about Yoga Nidra is that its a practice that anyone can do.  Simply lie down on your mat (with whatever props you want to be comfortable) and follow the voice of your teacher as he/she guides you through the Yoga Nidra meditation.   (I know some people who even practice Yoga Nidra lying on their couch or bed to be extra comfortable.)

Through the guided meditation, you are taken on a journey, focusing on your surroundings, your breathing, and your body through a series of sensory awareness cues.  Sometimes, people become so relaxed that they fall asleep during Yoga Nidra.  (But don’t let that dissuade you – it just means your body really needed that rest!)

No matter how we describe it, the bottom line is Yoga Nidra is an incredibly relaxing experience.  Again, I would argue it is the perfect self-care.  If you have never experienced Yoga Nidra, I invite you to join us from the comforts of home for a virtual class held on Sunday evenings at 6:30 pm.  It is the perfect way to prepare yourself for a great night of sleep and for the week ahead.
